Still Getting Facebook Page Spam from other Businesses?

A few year's ago when businesses all got on board the Facebook Page Frenzy, many were unsure how to go about introducing their page or product to others and went about it the wrong way by liking other pages, and then proceeding to "crap" all over the other businesses' pages with posts about their own business.  Needless to say this was most annoying and unwanted by professional business owners who had pride in the appearance of their business pages on Facebook.

Well today I discovered that this practice of "seagulling" (Term created by the fabulous Karen Gunton from Build A Little Biz) sadly still exists.  After a weekend off over Easter I discovered two posts from another business on my page, marketing their own page with no purpose other than to somehow get me to "pop over and like their page"??  No Thanks!

Other Options other than Seagulling:

There are many ways in which you can use Social Media to gain a larger audience, but "crapping" on pages is unacceptable and will turn businesses away or most likely inspire them to block or report you to Facebook which could result in a temporary ban or closure of your Facebook Page - not the result you were after!

So what can you do to encourage others that you may know to visit your page if you are getting started or just trying to reach 25 likes so you can gain a Facebook Page Username?

5 Easy Ideas on how to get the first 25 Likes to your Page:
  1. An oldy but an easy.... Invite your personal Facebook friends to like your page.
  2. If you know other business owners and think your business can compliment each other, visit their page, but send them a personal message through the message button, not on their wall.  Explain a little bit about your business and how you think you could work together.  Do not just promote your own business unnecessarily.
  3. Include your Facebook address on all outgoing information, email signatures, marketing work, letters etc.
  4. Ensure you have social plugins to Facebook added to your Website or Blog so social media users can easily just click on the "Like Button"
  5. Email your client list or send a new email to potential customers whom you know and introduce yourself and your business.  (Do not add names to an email database if they have not given you approval.)

More information on Facebook "Seagulling" by Karen Gunton of Build A Little Biz in the link below.  This blog post is from a few year's back but it is still accurate and appropriate today for the same re-occuring problem.  It is certainly worth a read for those wanting further information about this frowned on practice.

Gotta love those seagulls! It still amazes me after so much information is out there these days on FB etiquette that people still do this!

Great post Judi x
